Huge portions sizes, but perfectly tender and crispy tenderloin! Tried both a sandwich with lettuce, onion and mayo, as well as patty pelt - both delish! Service was quick and friendly! Best meal on our cross country road trip by far.

Traveling through Iowa city stopped for a quick bite. Food was great and service was super fast. Owner is really friendly and is interested in getting to know his customers. Glad we skipped jimmy johns for Joensy's! Will definitely return.

The short version: The food was acceptable -- I'd say the fries were actually excellent -- but the service was mediocre and there are some issues with cleanliness and safety such that I will *not* be returning. The long version: Having heard legends about the "awesome" pork tenderloins that used to be available when this place was located in Solon, IA, several of my friends in Iowa City were pretty excited to learn that Joensy's had re-opened there. We went in for lunch on a Friday. The place was roughly half full when we arrived at around 12:20. The waitress was quick to take our orders, and at that point all seemed well. Our food arrived in a timely manner, and it tasted like fried food should -- no complaints there. In fact, the french fries were outstanding. Most of the entrees we ordered came in those little oblong plastic baskets lined with butcher paper. None of the folks at our table ordered anything with gravy on it, so you can imagine my surprise when I realized that the entire underside of my basket was coated with gravy, which pooled up on the table beneath the basket. Fortunately, the basins of the baskets are solid plastic (as opposed to the sides which have gratings). Don't get me wrong, though, I'm not giving Joensy's a pass on this one. I can't help but question just what's going on in the kitchen/ dishwashing area. But the cleanliness issues weren't limited to what might be going on in the back. The first table we approached upon arriving wasn't clean, and neither was the second. If your customers have to search around the dining area to find a clean table, that's a clear indication that your staff are doing something wrong. To be somewhat fair, though, as far as I could tell there was only 1 person working out front and only 1 person working in back. Which brings me to the final part of this review. Throughout the duration of our visit, a young girl, who couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 years old, was playing by herself both in the dining area and in the kitchen area. That nobody complained each time she ran back into the kitchen leads me to believe that she is the daughter of one of the staff. Regardless, she was all but completely unsupervised in an environment that is arguably quite dangerous for a child. Just as we were leaving, we heard a tremendous crash from the kitchen area, immediately followed by sounds of the little girl crying in pain. It was almost certainly an accident, but that's completely beside the point -- that little girl should *not* have been left unattended in a restaurant kitchen, both for her safety and for the food safety of the patrons. For that reason I will not be returning to Joensy's.

If your choice is to eat here or have dirt for dinner...I'll let you borrow a shovel. This place is horrible! The tenderloin might be worst thing I ever put in my mouth.

So unfortunately they won't let me leave zero stars but I give this place zero stars. Disclaimer i have not had the food. First of all, we drive up to the strip mall that it is in and this guy is waving around papers in our face and we keep driving and he starts chasing us (so naturally we stop) and think something is wrong. No he's the "owner" and wants us to buy food at his establishment. Fine, however we were really just jumping off the highway to let our dogs out and grab a bottle of water. So he starts talking about everything they offer and my husband and I have very special food needs because of high cholesterol etc. In any case we politely decline and he keeps going on and on and on! So finally we get back in the car and eat some leftovers. He comes and KNOCKS ON OUR WINDOW and gets in our face that we didn't eat at his place and "did we really get JIMMY JOHNS?!?!" No, it was leftover Chipotle. So we asked him to leave, still continues to yell at us. Then my husband asked again for him to please leave and rolled up the windows/locked the door. So he goes back inside and comes out and motions for us to come talk to him. At this point I'm getting pretty freaked/creeped out so I told my husband to leave and this guy hit our car with his fist on our way out!?!?!?! What the heck?? Do not go here unless you want to be harassed!!!!!!

The famous Joensy's tenderloin has come to Iowa City. The restaurant is good, but the layout is a bit too wide-open. I'd like it to have a bit better layout, that was a bit more intimate. Beer selection is passable (almost completely big-brews). Tenderloin is where it's at, obviously. Best part of my visit was the french fries, though. Those were to die for. Prices are also very reasonable.

So happy to see Joensy's back. I loved this place when it was in Solon, now it is in Iowa City. The atmosphere is as little different than the old Solon location. The Solon location was more of a dark hole-in-the-wall place, the new location is newer abd brighter. I always get the tenderloin and it is always delicious and always huge. They have lots of fried appetizers, the pickle spears and fried cauliflower are fabulous. The prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly (family owned and operated) and the kids love the free ice cream with the kids meals.

Saturday night place was empty and the tenderloin I have heard so much about was dry and tasteless. Jimmy johns next Door would have been a better bet.

I have heard about the tenderloins from Joensy's for years and we finally each got one and it will be the last one. All I can say is it is big. The fries were awful and I had to spit out the coleslaw before I started to chew on it. Nasty!
